The MS Society Scotland

Scotland has the highest prevalence of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in the world. The condition, which progressively affects the central nervous system, has devastating effects on every aspect of a person’s life. There are 10,500 known people with MS in Scotland.

People affected by MS face avoidable distress, difficulty, frustration, discrimination and hardship.  For example, they face delays in diagnosis, often have to leave employment earlier than is necessary and, for those most severely affected by MS, there is very real difficulty in finding the right long-term care.  The causes and the cure for MS are not yet known; the challenge is to ensure that everyone living with the condition can live life to their full potential.

The MS Society Scotland (MSSS) already provides assistance in the form of advice, training and respite care for people affected by MS throughout Scotland - thanks to the support of thousands of individual donors, grants, legacies and a range of events.

Our project aims to forge links with new potential funders – particularly charitable trusts from whom MSSS has historically received only modest funding – and with whom longer-term relationships are desirable. Our appeal draws together a range of innovative and essential projects that MSSS aim to launch and presents them to charitable trusts whose aims have synergy with the projects.

This ongoing appeal is well on the way to reaching target of £140,000, with a number of applications to larger chartiable trusts awating an outcome.  Already these funds are being put into action with the roll out of a ground-breaking new course for carers ‘Caring for Someone with MS’.
