2011 – A charity Bloodbath?
In the last few weeks the media has been full of speculation that 2011 will prove to be a hard year for charity fundraising.
The fundraising arena is becoming increasingly competitive, as government funding shrinks the big society is meant to step in and take its place. But where are these funds going to come from and is there enough to go around?
Consensus in the third sector is that the outlook for charities in 2011 is difficult, even painful. A recent report in Third Sector magazine was entitled ‘Austerity Watch: 2011 will be a bloodbath’. The prognosis of the article was that cuts in statutory funding, a potential decrease in personal giving and bamboozlement about the role of the ‘big society’ would lead to ‘a difficult and painful 12 months’. The view of the Third Sector magazine’s panel of experts was that charities would have to reconfigure, essentially to reorganise, adopt new strategies and look elsewhere for funding in an increasingly competative environment.
Anecdotal evidence suggest that current fundraising strategy of many charities sImply will not meet new demands.
How can charities meet the fundraising demands that 2011 looks set to pose?
